What a fantastic ribbon cutting at Foss Swim School this week. There was yet another full crowd of Chamber and City officials including city council, chamber board, ambassadors and chamber members. As Chamber President Ed Kearney stated in his welcoming remarks, “you are in the saving people business with over 30 years experience and soon to be 30 locations in 8 states including 13 in Minnesota and from Illinois to Missouri. You certainly have made a splash on the safety of kids.”  Ed also noted that founder Jon Foss’ mother when she was 17 was at the lake with her siblings, her 9 year old little brother drowned which led to her (and him) having a lifelong passion and mission to save as many kids as possible. Jon FOSS later added that his mother instead of hiding from water, decided to learn to swim, become a lifeguard herself and taught her own kids excellence in swimming for safety to give him the conviction of saving kids. He said his schools and himself have taught over 50,000 kids.

Apple Valley Mayor Clint Hooppaw added much about what fantastic facility, pools and lessons that Foss offers and how thrilled our community is to have them. They really took this former Staples space and made it an important asset to Apple Valley. Foss has a mission of training teachers to work with every child who all learn in different ways, with teaching each child to their way of learning until they reach that “ah ha” moment when they get it and embrace the fun of swimming. Jon Foss noted that “kids lose that sinking feeling and find the joy of that flying feeling in the water.”

Even if you do not have any kids or adults in need of swim lessons, Foss invites everyone to stop by and take a look at their space. Jon Foss said “we have never had such a fantastic ribbon cutting that was this welcoming, this prepared, this crowded and with such well researched words. What a welcome from Apple Valley Chamber and the City.” Jon stayed late to give every person attending the ribbon cutting (including his own employees), a signed on the spot hardcover book for children about swim safety that he wrote and published. Foss Swim School is certainly going to make a splash in Apple Valley, making families safer in summer pools and lakes.
